“Rebel Yell” by S.C. Gwynne, Scribner, New York, NY, 2014 (Book about the American Civil War of 1861-1865)

rebel-yell-gwynneWe know not much about the American history, and this is the the book about it. The Union faced secessionists in eleven Southern states grouped together as the Confederate States of America. The Civil War General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson became a great and tragic American hero.

Page 102 reads: “He rode up to General Jackson and said: “General, they are beating us back.”

The reply was, “Sir, we’ll give them the bayonet”.

General Bee immediately rallied the remnant of his brigade, and his last words to them were: “There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Follow me.”

His men obeyed the call; and, at the head of his column, the very moment when the battle was turning in our favour he fell, mortally wounded.”
