One. Eva Vogelsang, 80, became the U.S. race walking champion in her age category at the National Seniors Games in early August at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. “It felt good when I crossed the finish line. I thought here I am in the U.S., racing 1500 meter distance for Canada”, said Eva.
Two. The Russian Government statistics said that 500,000 people die every year of alcoholism in Russia.
Three. On March 17, 2009 was launched the Idle Free Campaign. It was requested not to idle vehicles, trucks to be turned off their engines, to have an idle free zone set up in front of the offices. Although most people realize that engine exhaust decreases outdoor air quality, they probably do not realize that an idling engine actually releases more harmful emissions than an engine does during driving.
Four. There are many good progarms working in Canada. “Inn from the cold” for human beings or” Humane Societies” for animals. But “Birdline Parrot Rescue” is fostering, rehabilitating and re-adopting unwanted parrots to an official non-profit organization. A parrot’s life span can reach 100 years, and the people from this organization focus most of their efforts on trying to rehabilitate parrots who have physical, mental and emotional issues due to negative experiences in human homes.
Five. Kerby’s Seniors’ Center in Calgary offers a variety of programs aimed at stimulating the mind and body – from belly dancing and line-dancing classes to Spanish language and computer courses.
The annual Investors Group Thanksgiving Memory Walk and Run is set for October 11, from 10-00 a.m. to noon at Eau Claire Market. Participants have a choice of a five- or 10- kilometer run in support of the Alzheimer Society of Calgary.
