One. Last week the Stoney Trail ring road (Southbound) in Calgary at long last was opened. From 22 X, Sandance area straight to the North, 16th Avenue West turn left and then onto 68th Street right to the North. Now it is a new 20-minutes route directly from South to North instead of 35-40 minutes drive through Deerfoot Drive. It is a really good news!

Two. Sylvia Browne died at age of 77 in Good Samaritan Hospital, San Jose, California, USA, last week. An interesting woman, the author of 50 books, self described medium who could talk to the dead. Who can talk to her now? Maybe, her son Christopher?

Three. Alberta Lieutenant Donald S. Ethel presents George Wheeler Govier (on the photo) with Alberta Order of Excellence, along with seven other outstanding Albertans.

Three Calgarians were among eight outstanding Albertans inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence last month.

The three from Calgary recognized for their diverse and long-standing contributions were Dr. Robert Gibbins, Dr. George Govier and Hon. Capt. (N) William (Bill) Wilson.

Four. Congratulations to Alice Munro, Canada’s guru of the short story, for winning the Nobel Prize for literature. Every Canadian should be proud of  Ms. Munro, described by the Swedish Academy as a “master of the contemporary short story”.

Munro, 82, who has always shunned the spotlight, is reported to have a wicked sense of humour. Congratulations again, Alice Munro!

Five. Deed before creed is an ethical philosophy that has guided a Bragg Creek resident who founded five service organizations, and has been an active board member on numerous others for the past 53 years.

A community advocate, Karen Nordgaard, has devoted herself to helping improve the lives of Albertans, and on October 5th, Macleod MP Ted Menzies honoured her with the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award at a reception at her home.
